Welcome to The Green Room — your one-stop resource for everything Pay by Bank. Whether you're setting up for the first time, troubleshooting a declined payment, or just want to understand how it works, you'll find everything you need right here.

Throughout this guide, Pay by Bank is referred to as PBB.

The Basics

What is Pay by Bank?

Pay by Bank is Dutchie's cashless payment option that lets you pay directly from your bank account at participating dispensaries — no card, no cash, no ATM required. It works by securely linking your bank account once through Plaid, the same trusted technology used by services like PayPal and Venmo. Once linked, you can use Pay by Bank for online preorders, delivery orders, kiosk orders, mobile app orders, and in-store purchases — wherever your dispensary accepts it.

Many dispensaries are cash-only due to banking restrictions in the cannabis industry. Pay by Bank gives you a safe, digital alternative that works just like paying a bill online. Your full account number is never stored or shared, and you'll never need to handle cash or remember a card again.

1Link your bank account

Sign up and securely connect your checking or savings account. Takes about 2 minutes.

2Place your order

Shop online or in store at any participating dispensary and select Pay by Bank at checkout.

3Check out fast

Payment is pulled directly from your bank. No card, no cash, no delays at the register.

★ Why use Pay by Bank?

  • Skip the ATM — no cash needed
  • Faster checkout than cash or card
  • Your loyalty points and dispensary deals still apply
  • Bank-level encryption keeps your information safe
  • Works for both online preorders and in-store pickup

  • A checking or savings account at a major bank or credit union
  • Your online banking login credentials to securely link your account
  • A valid email address to create your Pay by Bank profile
  • A participating dispensary — ask your budtender or check checkout to confirm PBB is accepted

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

General
Is Pay by Bank safe? +
Yes. Pay by Bank uses bank-level encryption and secure authentication to connect to your account. Your full account number is never stored or shared with the dispensary.
Does Pay by Bank work like a debit card? +
It works similarly — payment is pulled directly from your bank account — but it's not processed through a card network. It uses a direct bank transfer, which is why it's available at dispensaries where traditional card payments may not be accepted.
Will my loyalty points still apply? +
Yes. Paying with Pay by Bank doesn't affect your loyalty points or any dispensary discounts. Everything applies as normal at checkout.
How does Pay by Bank compare to writing a check? +

Both Pay by Bank and a paper check are ACH payments — money moves directly from your bank account. The main difference is that Pay by Bank is fully electronic and automatic, while a check is manual. Here's how the steps compare:

ACH — Pay by Bank Paper check
Step 1 — Check your balance
An automatic balance check runs at checkout, but keeping enough funds in your account is always a good habit.
Balance checked automatically
Step 1 — Check your checkbook balance
Review your checkbook register before writing a check to confirm you have enough funds available.
Manual balance check
Step 2 — Finalized at the register
Your purchase is not complete until your budtender finalizes it at the register. Once confirmed, the debit is on its way — keep those funds in your account as the debit will post within 1–2 business days.
Finalized by budtender Keep funds available
Step 2 — Write and hand over the check
Once the check leaves your hands the funds are owed. Record it in your checkbook register immediately so you don't accidentally spend what's already committed.
Record it immediately
Step 3 — Sent electronically
Your payment travels securely through the banking network — no paper, no mailing required.
Secure & automatic
Step 3 — Mailed and deposited
The check is mailed, received, and deposited at the payee's bank. Keep those funds untouched until it clears.
Can take 3–7 days
Step 4 — Debit posts to your account
Within 1–2 business days the debit will appear in your transaction history. This is your purchase coming through — it is not an error.
1–2 business days Expected — not a mistake
Step 4 — Check clears your account
The amount is deducted and appears on your bank statement within 5 business days. Check it against your register to confirm it matches.
Up to 5 business days

The bottom line: Pay by Bank is faster, more secure, and fully automatic — but just like a check, the money doesn't leave your account instantly. Keep your funds available until the charge posts.
